Pregnant woman dies at Isunga health Center
Police in Kibaale is investigating the death of a pregnant woman which occurred yesterday 9th July 2012 at Isunga Health Center II in Kibaale district. There are conflicting reports on the cause of her death with some claiming, she died due to negligence of the health personnel while unconfirmed sources reported that the woman who was six months pregnant died of malaria. Whereas the cause of her death is yet to be established, the nurse who was on duty at the time this expectant mother died is under police custody and will be helping Police in these investigations.
Tinner Areeba a FOWODE Kibaale field officer, who coordinates the district village budget clubs that regularly monitor government performance in delivering services and demand accountability from duty bearers in this district, was today summoned by the District Criminal Investigations Department to help in the ongoing investigations. She stated that the death of this pregnant woman is of critical concern to the Kibaale village budget clubs that have since 2010 monitored service delivery at Isunga health center. “ As concerned community members who monitor government programs for improved service delivery, we are deeply touched that a mother has died at this health center and promise to follow the investigations to ensure that a comprehensive report on the cause of death for this woman is produced”, Tinner said.
In Uganda today, out of every 25 pregnant women, one faces a life time risk of pregnancy-related death, many of which are preventable. As advocates for gender responsive budgeting, FOWODE urges government to increase funding to this sector and particularly establish a maternal health fund to deal with infant and maternal mortality concerns in this country.
