Citizens in Mityana Hold their Leaders Accountable

Following the monitoring of government health centers, The Village budget clubs in Mityana held an interface meeting with the district leaders to hold them accountable. In their findings the Medical superintendent of Mityana Hospital informed them that the hospital dis not have enough health workers, the representative of the Deputy CAO responded to this and informed them that Mityana district is going to recruit more health workers in two months time and she committed herself that with the new recruitment the Main hospital and Maanyi health centre III shall be prioritized.

The Vice-chairperson of Mityana district also emphasized on this and committed that district shall post more health workers to these two health facilities and district wide.

On the issue of inadequate drugs at the center, the District Health Officer Dr. Lwasampijja Fred emphasized that many times NMS does not deliver all the required drugs that is why this problem continues to be persistent. He noted that once drugs are delivered NMS issues a certificate of delivery highlighting all the delivered drugs but they have never issued to us a certificate of noon delivery for drugs that have not been delivered. “ We are going to insist on demanding for this certificate because we can use it to claim for the drugs that were  not delivered such that we can have more drugs availed to these facilities.” he noted.

On provision of family planning services and accessibility (Non responsiveness by men), he Senior Nursing Officer, Sister Kalule commented on the issue of low male involvement in accessing family planning services. She noted that there is need to sensitize men on the importance of family planning services and she committed herself to doing this once provided with funds. However she appealed to FOWODE to also play a role in sensitizing the community on the importance of family planning services especially men since FOWODE reaches out to many people .
The chairperson of the Health and Education committee Hon. Harriet Mulumba pledged that she will invite them to attend the health committee and present family planning issues that need to be catered for, for example sensitizations that are still wanting to bring men on board. She noted that through this committee we can have family planning budgets increased to cater for sensitizations.

From the monitoring, they discovered that there were small maternity ward and inadequate delivery beds. The District Health Officer informed the community that, the issue of a small maternity ward is being catered for since the construction of a new hospital is in progress and the new maternity ward is big enough to accommodate the high number of delivering mothers at Mityana hospital. He also added that more delivery beds will be availed to add on to the available ones since they are not enough.

Absence of a delivery beds for people with disabilities was a key finding from the monitoring. The District Health Officer further noted that it is true PWD’s have a right to this service but it has actually been an oversight, he noted that as a department together with the management they are going to start conversations on how and where to procure or access a delivery bed for PWD’s at Mityana hospital. But for Maanyi HC III he requested the community of Maanyi sub county to be patient such that they first cater for
Mityana hospital in as far as PWD’s are concerned.

The group found out that there is no ambulance at Mityana Main Hospital and Maanyi HCIII. In response to this, The District Health Officer informed the gathering that this concern has been a problem for long, he promised to go to the Ministry of Health to emphasize on the need since the next referral hospital is Mulago and it very far. He promised to have a positive answer in the next quarter. And committed that district shall provide mattresses to this centre to cater for the beds that do not have mattresses.
