Empowering women in Masindi to transform their communities
An empowered
woman has the capacity to transform her community. As elections edge close,
Forum for Women in Democracy is focusing its energies in civic education
because we believe that women’s role at all levels are critical in shaping the
future of our country Uganda. In July,
we carried out training in Masindi to sensitize the community on civic
education, build cohesion by forming groups to start up income generating
activities
The group formed Agaterine that means combined effort was formed after being trained on soap making by Barungi
susan a Trainer of Trainers who participated in the FOWODE young
leadership building camp in June 2014, she came back and imparted the skills to
the community members and some got interested and formed a group comprising of
18 menbers 16 women and 2 men in Budongo sub county Nyatonzi village Masindi
District.
This group has acknowledged the fact that
combined effort is the way to go in empowering themselves economically for a
collective voice. They have also decided to start small.
“The liquid soap has helped in different
ways, this is now our third time when we are making it and the market we have
so far is the churches, schools and the community who buy it for cleaning at
home, the soap comes out well and our customers like, so far we have not yet
started parking in bigger bottles but as the market increases we will increase
on the size, we measure using a nice cup which we put in the a small mineral
water bottle and sell it at 1000/= each” says Abigaba Abifaisi a group member
Drani shedruk Reverend of Katungo C.O.U
also a group member says that in the first phase they bought
liquid soap of 10,000/= for cleaning the church and it stayed for long, it
cleans very well and many people come buy whenever we make it, mostly boda-boda
riders like it so much because they use little and it washes well that has
enabled the economize their money
This group is learning that saving is key
to economic empowerment, the group has profited from the liquid soap and hopes
to start lending to members money so that they bring back an interest.
Forum for Women in Democracy is still
relentless in shaping the future through empowering citizens in Uganda
especially women to participate at all level of decision making. And we believe that when women are economically empowered, they have a voice.
