YOUTH FOR YOUTH: FYLAA EMPOWERS HANA STUDENTS
While the world
celebrated the World Labour Day on 1st May, FYLAA spent the day at Hana High
School. With over 300 students in attendance, discussions were held on key
issues that challenge the youth today mainly on entrepreneurship, leadership,
gender, reproductive health, self marketing skills, self help and personal
development skills.
The youth were taught
how to use their passions to generate income rather than be dependent on
parents. Ideas of cooking, dancing, singing were given as those that have taken
many heights yet require discovering by an individual. The young people were
also taken through reproductive health session with emphasis on taking charge
of their bodies. They were advised to take wise decisions that will keep them
away from being taken advantage of. It was emphasized that young people should
delay sex as research says that young people who got involved in sex at an
early age do not live longer.
The training saw a
lot of enthusiasm, with commitment to ensure safe sexual behaviors, discover
personal strengths and use their passions to get incomes.
Faith Achan, a
student says, ‘Together with her mother, I
set up a restaurant in Apac that makes the best Tea and chapatti and now also
come from people traveling from Kampala for tea. I also started selling pea nut
butter that I supplies to schools and super markets and individuals.
The event was
organized in conjunction with Reach a Hand Uganda (RAHU) an organization that addresses the key issues that leave Ugandan youth
vulnerable to health outcomes like, HIV, Sexual Transmittable Infections
(STIs), and early pregnancy.
