FOWODE donates Mama kits to Kamwezi Health Center IV
Forum for Women in Democracy (FOWODE) in July broke off its three day midterm review meeting to visit Kamwezi Health Center IV in Kabale district the purpose of the visit was to monitor the quality of maternal health care services. While at the health center, FOWODE donated a set of mama kits to the health center as a means of supporting women’s access to quality maternal health care.
Although government plans annually to give free mama kits to expectant mothers this has been hard to implement on government’s side as many health centers that FOWODE village budget clubs monitor have discovered that in some instances, the health centers end up selling the mama kits to the patients and in others do not have the mama kits at all.
It was for this main reason FOWODE, on their visit, made monitoring the maternity ward and donating MAMA KITS to the health center a priority. The donation was handed over by the Executive Director; Patricia Munabi Babiiha and Senior Programme Director; Julius Mukunda of FOWODE. Components of the mamakit were displayed and shown to the community members to educate them on what a mama kit entails. The health center midwife Basemera Sharon appreciated FOWODE’s support to the health center and specifically thanked the Kamwezi Village Budget Cub members who monitor service delivery at this health center.
According to the midwife, the key challenges faced by the health center, is the lack of a water source at the health center which requires patients to come to the health center with their own water. From the budget that had been made for Kabale District however, it was disappointing that it wasn’t mentioned. A mistake or intended omission? FOWODE focused on the mama kits to send out a message of better maternal health everywhere. It is understood that these mama kits are meant to be free for every health centre in the country but there have been cases of their scarcity. It is the hope of FOWODE that this will change.
